2019 Dauphin Island Show
The 2019 show was scheduled for the 7th of April. After a dry and sunny week the forecast for the show's weekend was dire. Because the perishables for the food concession would not last until the rain date 3 weeks away, The PTO (parent teachers organization) needed a Yea or Nay by Friday when they were to buy the meat and shrimp. A strong cold front was to bring big rain on Saturday night which would probably continue into Sunday. Also, it promised to cause flooding and high winds with even a chance of tornados! Saturday did have stormy weather. Although Sunday morning was cloudy and gray, it was dry and the show could have gone on. But of course by then it was too late. We had already deferred to our April 28th rain date. As luck would have it the weather on the 28th was outstanding. Blue skies and warm sunshine lasted all day long.
This year we had a new venue: Green Park near the water tower. The school yard has been unavailable ever since they put a large playground in the middle of it. We had not been happy with the Waves restaurant site across from the school as it was cramped, dusty, and just not very attractive. Club Member John Burke suggested Green Park. Although we all had driven by it many times few of us knew what a beautiful place it actually was and with a massive parking lot to boot. When some of us finally inspected it we were very impressed. The city controls it and Mayor Collier agreed to let us use it. It worked out better than we could have hoped for. It has electricity and water for the PTO cooks, a stage for the band, and a pretty gazebo that we used for the registration. The venders set up in the open space under the cool canopy formed by the live oaks. We set the show bikes up in the paved parking lot but next year we will try to put them inside the park under the trees. If the sun comes out bikers are ready to ride. And ride they did. Hundreds of riders came to see the show and that kept the PTO cooks and venders busy all day long. It was worth it. The show raised $6500 for the PTO!
Special thanks go to Beverly Moritz and Chris Conover for manning the registration table.
We had seven judges. Each judge voted in each class by assigning 3 points to their first choice, 2 points to their second and 1 point to their third. We then added up the total points for each bike. The ones with the 3 highest points in each class won trophies. To get judges that are knowledgeable about vintage bikes means they probably have a bike in the show. That is not a problem as we simply ask them not to cast a vote in their bike's class. Below is a list of winners. Click on the blue link to see a picture of the bike. Best of Show went to Gary Barker's 1946 Indian Chief (which he rode to the show from Mississippi).
The venders set up in the park which was cool and airy.
The PTO was busy with food and souvenir sales all day long...
...while the
band played on.
The bikes ranged from way cool...
to way sexy....
to way weird.
