2018 Dauphin Island Show
The 2018 show was scheduled for the 15th of April. This would normally be tax day but because the 15th was on a Sunday the filing deadline was bumped forward a couple of days. After a dry and sunny week the forecast for the weekend was dire. A strong cold front was to bring big rain on Saturday night which would probably continue into Sunday. Also, it promised to cause flooding and high winds with even a chance of tornados! Everybody battened down the hatches Saturday and we did experience stormy weather Saturday night. A few buildings in Mobile had roof damage from straight line winds but thankfully no funnel clouds. On Sunday morning the skies were clear and the show was on. The Island was cold and windy at 8:00 AM when we started to set up the site. But as the day progressed the temperature improved and by noon it was comfortable and even the wind moderated. Bringing a show bike to the Dauphin Island Show requires some preparation and we suspect that many potential entrants were so sure that Sunday was going to be a wash that they were caught flat footed by the sudden improvement in the weather. As a result we only had 50 bikes entered this year which was down from the ~90 we have come to expect. But for spectators the weather was less of an issue. If the sun comes out bikers are ready to ride. And ride they did. Hundreds of enthusiasts came to see the show and that kept the PTO cooks and venders hopping all day long. As a result this year's show netted the Dauphin Island PTO $6800! Special thanks go to Beverly Moritz, her daughter Kelly, and Steve McClintock for manning the registration table.
We had seven judges. Each voted by assigning 3 points to their first choice, 2 points to their second and 1 point to their third. All of the votes for each bike were then totaled to determine the final winners. Some judges had bikes in the show and they were not allowed to vote in the class they were entered in. That allowed us to have knowledgeable judges. Below is a list of winners. Click on the blue link to see a picture of the bike. Click on the GALLERY to see pictures from the show. There should be a picture of every bike entered in the gallery.
